Saturday 18 October I accompanied a dear friend curandero Nazca oasis of Huacachina. A small pond of water surrounded by palm trees, out of the city of Ica, in the Peruvian desert.
We started to climb the sand dunes bordering the oasis greeting the arrival of the sun.
From the top of one of the main dune, the oasis and the immensity of the desert we felt a particular sense of contact and peace, feelings amplified by the observation of ritual gestures of the Shaman.
Felix explained us that the rising of the sun, that the Incas called God Inti, was a moment through which, man can recharged their energy. Only had to look at the sun and raised the right arm bringing it toward chest, taking deep breaths. This simple gesture helped to give vitality to the body.
The ritual then followed an old Inca tradition, that is lost in the mists of time, to offer coca leaves to the Earth . The officiant asked in exchange for prosperity and security for their people.
On the night Felix burned incense and thanked the oasis. The pre-Hispanic peoples believed that some places had their own life and rituals were used to be able to get in touch with nature.
The shamans as Felix, today, remain important figures in Peruvian culture and transmit the essence of a simple truth. We live in a material world where the conception of reality is governed by social conventions that we taught from birth.
We have no alternatives cognitives possible. Everything that is not perceivable is automatically discarded and therefore does not exist.
The sorcerer, talking to the Sun, Earth, the invisible forces, creates for a moment, in our concept of reality, a small hole, a flaw. At that moment we cease to see the world through our usual, customary beliefs.
The art of the curandero, is to show new paths, deceiving our perceptual concreteness.
When the reality falls, healing can follow alternative routes, serious problems disappear, anything is possible.
The pre-Hispanic rituals, as well as those Catholics, trap the rationality and the mechanical of the daily, giving way to doubt and inner dialogue.
While we are not engaged in contemplating ourselves, we listen to a world more extensive. The religious fervor makes miracles happen and the rituals of the shaman inexplicable healings.
Intuition becomes the only appropriate means to codify these new cognitive areas. Areas in which, only the mystic man, trained to move into these unknown paths, can guide us.
