Expedition between the Incas and Archaeology in the magic Heart of the Desert of Ica

Expedition between the Incas and Archaeology in the magic Heart of the Desert of Ica
29-30 November, 01 December 2013.

Expectations of a planned trip 5 years ago there were so many and so I wanted to leave without illusions, without asking for anything. At the end of all my hope has been rewarded. As I suggested an Italian friend of Lima prefer to communicate this experience to as the desert gave it to me. Silence, Peace and breathtaking images that no one will ever steal. A heartfelt thanks to our guide / explorer Mr.. Roberto Penny Cabrera, who has preserved us for three days by the hostility of the desert with care and attention.

Fossil dwarf whale that lived about 10 million years ago. All the desert of Ica at that time was a shallow temperate marine fish where prehistoric, Whales, giant sharks, shells, marine and aquatic birds from the trees toothed beak formed a stable habitat that no longer exists.

Canyon alluvial, in the background you can still see water puddles, last witness of the passage of huayco or the torrent of mud caused by heavy seasonal rainfall in the mountains. In the sky we saw some planar Gallinazo Cabecirojo with their black and white plumage and the characteristic red head similar to that of older cousin, Condor.

The camp. The tent made by Roberto was completed in 30 years of explorations of the desert. Inspired by an Inca camp situated a little’ downstream. The shape is a shell and back to the wind. On the sides are open to air during the day and keep warm at night thanks to a small brazier. its aerodynamic shape makes the wind slides on the structure without let in the sand. Simply brilliant and allowed us to be able to see the stars at night and eddies of wind that passed next day!

Remains of a camp prehispanic. On site there are still several conch shells, the food they consumed and could be transported long distances without deteriorating. These people were moved from the coast and within the Inca empire (Inca Empire) likely to trade with other villages. Lined up stones to show their passes and had learned to repair itself efficiently at night and to use the scarce resources of the desert. To drink such as filters used granite stone placed in a fan to raise the humidity of the night thanks to the lichens that grew there over. This technique is still used by the fox to survive all'arsura the desert and makes us understand how the interplay between man and nature (Pachamama) had a much more profound.

Sodium carbonate rocks eroded so wonderful incessant action of the wind and frequent reels.

Roberto on a perfect circle of stones lined up by the Incas hundreds, perhaps millennia ago.

This club is located on a plain where the desert winds always remain free sky.

A tunnel in the sky perfect for studying the stars at night and predict weather events. Downstream is possible to identify several remains of pre-Hispanic settlements.

The mountains of the oracle, rock formations that cause the mysterious phenomenon studied by Roberto aura circular.

When the first rays of the sun strike the humidity of the desert night, is formed, only in this area, a mysterious circular rainbow. This multicolored circle surrounds the shadow of the sun reflected by those who aim.

It’ sure that the Incas knew about this phenomenon because the oracle in the valley below you can see the remains of several shelters Inca, alignments of stones and filters to get water from the desert.

See the article on oracle.

Meeting point of two tectonic plates in the middle of the desert. From this come the friction frequent and devastating earthquakes that have shaken the whole of Peru and the region of Ica.

Rocks shaped by ocean currents millions of years ago when the desert of Ica was under the seabed.

IMG_5359b

The hand of the Incas, a stone that was shaped first by sea currents of the ocean disappeared millions of years ago and then by pre-Hispanic peoples perhaps for ritual purposes.

Stone poised on the slope of a mountain. In the area you can see prehistoric shark teeth and various marine fossils.

IMG_5409

Tooth Megalodon, prehistoric shark that lived millions of years ago could reach 18 feet long with individual teeth as large as eight inches.

Desert lizard, has never seen human beings but just a few crumbs of bread to have it friend. When he runs, it looks like a small dinosaur miniature. Exceeded all other species in the area, it has not been extinguished!

From the top of a steep mountain, climbing personally, I could see the immensity of the desert and the faithful “camioneta” Roberto. At the top I met heaps of granite stones and wooden material buried, perhaps by the Incas, to protect from moisture Night.

A follow other travel photos.

  1. Nice and interesting!
As Yuri likes to travel, know and then write articles; I prefer to use the photos and then projecting them speak. It would not hurt if we started to think about what we can do together!

  2. Yuri Leveratto

Very interesting, thanks. The important thing is to continue to “explore”, in the sense of trying to know the places and people, but in the end even ourselves.

    continues!
